1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL



A perfectly restored, aluminum-bodied 300SL Gullwing went for a record number at the Scottsdale Auction over the weekend. Rare car collectors Ralph Lauren and Jay Leno both have a 1955 300SL Gullwing in their private collections. But neither has this rare aluminum 'Alloy' Gullwing, of which only 29 were built.Completed on 20 April 1955, chassis number 550028 was finished in metallic silver gray over a blue leather interior, and fitted with Rudge wheels, the NSL motor and Plexiglass windows.

That same year the car made its way to California and in 1980 it was sold to a German collector for $57,000. By 1982 it had been through a meticulous restoration at the hands of Hill & Vaughn in Santa Monica, famed for their restorations and who were frequent winners at Pebble Beach. It later returned to Germany and went through numerous restorations and a new paintjob, but by 2009 it was in the hands of Ken McBride, a noted Gullwing collector.

Knowing the importance of an Alloy Gullwing, the car was sent to renowned 300 SL restorer Rudi & Co., who brought the car back to its original self, with the right shade of silver and blue leather interior. In 2011 the restoration was complete, boasting superior attention to detail. The original engine remains, it sits on original chrome Rudge wheels, the luggage is properly finished in natural pig skin, the grille has the proper 'curved star', and even the Becker radio is correct.

The Gullwing is a beautifully engineered motorcar with plenty of power and torque. Arguably the most important road-going Mercedes of the post-war era and certainly one of the most iconic cars of all time, it's not often one of these rare cars goes to auction, hence why more than double the expected price was paid to own a genuine piece of automobile history. - carbuzz.com -

Mercedes C63 AMG DTM Safety Car


 
The 2012 DTM Safety Car will come in the form of a Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series. The 2012 DTM season is set to kick off on April 29th and Mercedes-Benz has announced today that the Safety Car for the new season will indeed be a C63 AMG Black Series.

The German Touring Car Masters Championship has seen the likes of the BMW M3 and C63 AMG sedan serve in this role before along with several Audi models, however this year something much different and much more powerful will make its way onto the track. The C63 AMG Black Series coupe features an AMG 6.3-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine rated at 517hp and 457 lb-ft of torque. This is the most powerful C-Class model the German brand has ever built, and it even eclipses the Mercedes-Benz AMG C-Coupe which runs in the DTM series, as it only puts out 500hp from its V8.

The Black Series Safety Car has been fitted with a modified AMG sports exhaust system. A special rear silencer is said to guarantee a distinctive AMG V8 sound.The Safety Car can sprint from 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds and reach an electronically-limited top speed of 186mph. For track purposes, the C63 AMG Black Series has been fitted with a pair of AMG Sport bucket seats has been added along with four-point seatbelts. An AMG Performance steering wheel wrapped in Nappa leather and Dinamica has been installed as well.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class EDITION30 And G-Class EDITION30

 
It's been thirty years since production began on the Mercedes G-Class, and since then, it's become one of the most enduring models of our time. In total, some 200,000 units of the G-Class have been delivered to customers around the world, all the more impressive considering its design has remained largely unchanged throughout its life span. Of course, as with any noteworthy Mercedes birthday, it's only fitting a special anniversary model is unveiled to celebrate the occasion, and the G-Glass' 30th is no exception. In fact, Mercedes has announced the availability of not only one, but two special G-Class 30th anniversary models: the G-Class EDITION30 and G-Class EDITION30.PUR.

The first – the Mercedes G-Class EDITION30 – is based on the G 463 series; specifically, a long-wheelbase G500 Station Wagon. Features include a designo platinum black paint finish, specially designed light-alloy wheels and EDITION30 lettering on the wings, while inside, designo leather in "chablis" and designo trim in anthracite poplar wood are both present.

2013 Mercedes-Benz SL


As for the Mercedes G-Class EDITION30.PUR, it's based on the long-wheelbase G280 CDI from the G 461 series, and pays homage to the first-generation G-Class model. Dubbed as "the future dream car for world travelers, expedition leaders, confirmed fans of the 'G' and customers who are in search of an automotive rarity with uncompromising reliability and the ability to go anywhere," the EDITION30.PUR is available with two optional off-road packages. Options available include flexible wheel arch flaring, protective grilles for the headlamps and lights, a walk-on bonnet for easier access to the roof rack, a towing lug at the front and a two-section rear door. Inside, four individual seats in either fabric or man-made leather are present, as are spray-protected controls, drainage apertures in the footwells, load lashing lugs and rails, and an auxiliary heater and manually operated air conditioning.

2013 Mercedes-Benz SL




 I have to be careful. There are a lot of police around today," said Jurgen Weissinger. He's the chief engineer for the complete Mercedes-Benz sports car line -- and specifically for the highly camouflaged SL550 in which I was a passenger, the model to be revealed at the 2012 Detroit show.

That we were rocketing uphill on a winding two-lane mountain road at about 110 mph made his words slightly inappropriate, but since the car felt as if we were proceeding quietly at half that speed, I was relaxed and just enjoyed the ride. When the SL series started some six decades back with sports racing cars, the chief engineer for the project was Rudolf Uhlenhaut, who had been responsible for engineering Mercedes grand prix cars in the 1930s.

He was famously known to be an exceptionally capable driver, as fast as -- or even faster than -- the drivers of the racing team, although he never competed in motorsports. Born in London, he spoke English like a native. Weissinger very much reminds me of the great man, in that he's fluent in English and is as reassuringly masterful on the road as any of the world-champion racing drivers I've ridden with over the years. Weissinger knows the roads in the Swabian Alps south of Stuttgart like a native because he is one, born and raised in the area he likes to use for testing, so his local knowledge removes one more variable from exploration of a car's ability. And this SL's ability is considerable.

The ride is amazingly comfortable, worthy of a limousine yet dead flat and free of any hint of wallow or sogginess. "The springs are soft, the damping firm," Weissinger offered, but he had no need to explain; the chassis spoke for itself. The SL is completely new, with a cutting-edge chassis made entirely of aluminum. Massive chilled-cast aluminum structural members are joined with extruded sections by bonding, bolting, MIG welding, and friction-stir welding to make an enormously rigid structure to which all-new suspension elements are fixed. They're aluminum, too. You'd expect a considerable reduction in total weight from the change of principal structural material, and the savings is 240 pounds for the body-in-white, despite a more than 20 percent increase in torsional rigidity. The engineering goal seems to have been to make the SL feel as though it's machined from a huge billet, and if that was the intent, it was attained.

The direct-injected aluminum V-8 engine is familiar from the CL550, a twin-turbocharged affair from which 429 hp and an impressive 516 lb-ft of torque is drawn. It sounds wonderful, which is not accidental. "We worked on the sounds the engine makes, tuning the exhaust system so that it is sporty but not loud," said Weissinger, putting his foot down to demonstrate the point. With the seven-speed automatic, ratio changes are extremely smooth, and the sounds tell you what you can't really feel since there are no abrupt changes of thrust as the car accelerates -- smoothly, to 60 mph in only 4.5 seconds.

 It was a brisk fall morning, but we were comfortable in the open car, the heating and ventilation system ensuring proper conditions in the cockpit no matter what was happening outside. To that everyday-usability point, the SL is the first to receive Mercedes' new Magic Vision Control windshield wipers. Two separate washer-fluid circuits feed laser-drilled holes on either side of the wiper. When washing the windshield, fluid is sprayed only on the leading edge of the wiper. The result is no glare, very little wasted water, and, since the system sprays only on the downstroke with the top down, there are no unwanted showers for the passengers. The system automatically determines the amount of fluid to use, too -- more in cold, snowy conditions and less in the dry and dust. As an option for cold climates, the entire system can be heated, the reservoir using engine coolant and the hoses and wiper blades warmed by 270 watts of electric heat. Thoughtful space utilization compelled Mercedes to locate the SL's two 8.5-inch subwoofers in the footwells, using as resonating chambers space that would have otherwise gone unused. In addition to moving the sound stage in front of the passengers, removing the largest speakers from the doors eliminates rattles and allows for a wider cabin. An optional photochromic glass roof can vary from transparent to opaque at the driver's command, and Mercedes claims that the top takes up a relatively small percentage of rear body volume by the standards of a retractable hardtop.

The result is increased luggage space and room for the proverbial set of golf clubs. This is decidedly an all-season, everyday roadster. If at first the SL line of production cars was sharply separated into the fast, racing-derived 300SL Gullwing coupe and the sluggish 190SL boulevard tourer in 1955, by 1963 the two were replaced by a single model that combined sporting ability -- the 230SL won the difficult Spa-Sofia-Liege long-distance rally from Belgium to Bulgaria and back -- and comfort. That combination has been the policy for almost fifty years now. In this R231 iteration, "every comfort and safety feature of the S-class, standard or optional, is available on the SL," says Weissinger.

That the Mercedes-Benz SL continues to combine, in one model, the performance of a supercar with all the attributes of a luxury car is an extraordinary achievement. The SL is unique in these attributes among today's roadsters, and as the most iconic vehicle of the entire Mercedes lineup, the switch to aluminum construction and direct-injected turbocharged engines helps put the SL back at the leading edge of technology -- something that was missing from the car it's replacing. Mercedes E-class coming in January 2013


On the way out are the Mercedes E-class's pontoon-style rear side panels, the quad headlamps and the ritzy daytime running lights. Instead, the revised 2013 E-class features a brand-new front end, restyled rear side panels, and a heavily modified rear view. It's hard to believe, but the only exterior elements the 2013 model is going to carry over from the current vintage are the roof, the front doors and the windows. Everything else is new, fresh, contempory, less contrived and more coherent.

Mercedes facelifts the E-class - ahead of a range overhaul Although Mercedes won't start the Real Design Revolution before 2014 when the next C-class and brand-new S-class coupé are due to see the light, the facelifted E-class is notably more elegant and less in-your-face that the version it replaces. The saloon goes on sale in spring 2013, the estate follows in summer 2013, while the AMG and 4Matic editions wrap things up that autumn. Also coming are three different hybrid versions.

The C-class is selling in bigger numbers and the S-class is earning bigger profits, but no other Mercedes is positioned closer to the core of the brand than the E-class. The extensive reskin eliminates most of the overly decorative styling cues while taking on board such new items as single-piece multi-functional headlamp units as well as a small army of cameras, lenses and sensors that feed the more advanced driver assistance systems.

The driver gadgets coming on the 2013 Mercedes E-class facelift There's an awful lot coming: • Improved night assistant Not only draws the attention to cyclists and pedestrians but also warns of crossing wild animals • Dynamic light assistant No longer uses adaptive bi-xenon technology but relies on fast moving multi-directional LED pixels which automatically avoid oncoming traffic • Intelligent lane assistant Not only monitor own lane but also supervises oncoming traffic and will issue an early collision warning • Intelligent brake assistant Derived from Distronic III, this radar-based cruise control keeps an eye on the vehicle in front and - as a world first - on cross traffic • Congestion assistant Automatically follows the vehicle in front at speeds of up to 40mph even if the route involves direction and lane changes • Magic ride control Employs a stereo camera which scans the road surface and makes the black box adjust damper action accordingly • Head-up display Extended functions, state-of-the-art graphics, multi-colour imaging • Car-to-X-communication Recognises police/ambulance/fire brigade vehicles, relays car-to-car messages like black ice or aquaplaning warning, permits partially autonomous driving though brief steering, brake and acceleration inputs Yep, that's right.

There's no excuse to crash the E-class now. Engines on board the facelifted E-class Mercedes still has no answer to the high-performance diesels offered by Audi (313bhp) and BMW (381bhp). Since a significant boost in power output would require a brand-new derv-drinking V6 which is at this point not funded, even the all-new next E-class out in 2015 will be wanting in this department. In Europe, the only V8 which survives in the E-class is the 537bhp 5.5-litre kraftwerk reserved for the E63 AMG. The E500 becomes an export-only model which sheds the ageing 408bhp unit in favour of a turbocharged 4.6-litre motor good for 435bhp and 516lb ft.

The modified E200 will be equipped with a 156bhp 1.6-litre four built by Renault - of course to MB specification. Another new addition to the range is the E350 which gains extra grunt from its 333bhp 3.5-litre V6. The only change on the diesel front concerns the demise of the 300 CDI. In terms of alternative drivetrains, there is a 27bhp mild hybrid in the works which will be followed by a 68bhp plug-in edition in 2014 and by an even brawnier 109bhp top-of-the-line planet saver twelve months later (all bhp numbers relate to the electric motor).

One more thing: the 252bhp engine earmarked for the E300 may at the eleventh hour switch from the familiar 3.0-litre V6 to a new turbocharged 2.0-litre four. Seems like the BMW 328i has given the competition some food for thought. - carmagazine.co.uk -

History

W120 'Ponton'

The first modern mid size Mercedes was the W120 'Ponton' 180 of 1953. Sharing its engineering with the R121 190 SL of 1955, the Ponton was a stylish sedan with four-cylinder power. A larger-engined W121 190 appeared in 1958.

W110 'Fintail'

Mercedes added tailfins to both the big S-Class and the new W110 'Fintail' 190 of 1962. Straight-6 power appeared for the first time in the 1965 230 model, and the fours grew in displacement that year as well.

W114/W115 'Stroke-8'

The mid size Mercedes was redesigned in 1968 as the W114/W115 'Stroke-8'. This time, the 6-cylinder models (The W114s) were most prevalent, with the W115 line making up the bottom of the company's offerings with four – and five-cylinder power. Diesel engines joined the line-up, as did a coupé body.

W123

The popular W123 quickly became a best-seller on its launch in 1976. Especially in Diesel 240D (and later 300D) guises, the cars enhanced the company's reputation for product quality. Over 2.3 million were produced until the end of production in 1986.
Saloon/Sedan, Coupé and Estate body configurations were offered.

W124

The 'E-Class' name first appeared in the USA with the face-lifted W124 for the model year 1994 (the w124 was introduced in the US in 1986 but continued with the older models' naming convention until 1993, when all Mercedes-Benz models switched to a new system, e.g., E320 instead of 300E). The 300D continued to be the fuel economy option over the 4 and 6 cylinder gasoline engines, and the gasoline V8 engines (available after 1992) increased gasoline power outputs further. The V8 powered sedans/saloons were named 400E/500E from 1992–1993, and E420/E500 after 1993. Likewise, the 3-liter cars (e.g., 'E300') where also re-badged to 'E320' with the new 3.2 litre engines and naming rationalization of 1994.
Saloon/Sedan, Coupé, Convertible and Estate body configurations were offered.
From 1992 to 1994 Mercedes offered a limited production sport version of the W124 sedan, created and assembled with help from Porsche. This was called the 500E (E500 for 1994).

W210

The W210 E-Class, launched in 1996, brought the mid-size Mercedes firmly into the upper end of the luxury market. Though six-cylinder models were still offered for a time, the four-light front end and high prices moved the car upmarket. In September 1999 the W210 E-class was facelifted. This included visual, mechanical and quality improvements over the earlier versions.
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class was Motor Trend's Import Car of the Year for 1996.

 

W211

Launched in 2002, the W211 E-Class was another evolution of the previous model and was considered by the motoring media as an even more competitive offering to the long term rival BMW 5-Series (which previously was the preferred choice of the motoring media). Before North American sales began, the car was shown in the 2002 movie Men in Black II.
The W211-based W219 CLS-Class 4-door coupé was introduced as a niche model in 2005, primarily to attract a younger demographic.
The W211 E-Class was face lifted in 2007 to address quality and technical issues raised by earlier models, Sensotronic was dropped, while Pre-Safe (w/o brake support) was made standard. The largest factory built engine in the E-class range is the E500 (badged E550 in the U.S.) which had its engine size increased from 5 litres to 5.5 litres in 2006 along with the facelift. There is also an AMG model badged E63 AMG and other tuning house installations.
Mercedes-Benz introduced their BlueTec Diesel system to the E-Class at the 2006 North American International Auto Show as the E320 CDI BlueTec. BlueTec is a two-phase system for cleaning diesel emissions. The first phase makes the E320 CDI legal in 45 of the 50 United States (plus the District of Columbia). The second phase uses urea for further reductions to meet the more stringent standards of California, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, and Vermont. Sales of E320 CDI BlueTec began in autumn 2006 as a 2007 model, but 50-state legal models with urea injection will not be introduced until the 2009 model year.

W212


The W212 replaced the W211 in 2009. Official photos of the W 212 were leaked on the internet on 9 December 2008 ahead of its 2009 Geneva Motor Show unveiling.

Scans of a leaked brochure were posted onto the internet in January 2009, detailing the whole E-Class range including the new E 200 CGI and E 230 CGI with direct injected forced inducted engines.

New features include a blind spot monitor, Lane Keeping Assist, Pre-safe with Attention Assist and Night View Assist Plus. In the United States the E-class will be priced nearly US$4,600 less than the previous model. The E-class coupe is built in Bremen using the W204 C-class platform.

The W212 estate was also announced and goes on sale from November 2009.

The W212 cabriolet was announced January 11, 2010 at the North American International Auto Show, for sale March 27, 2010 in Europe and in May 2010 in the United States.


Features on the 2010 version include folding mirrors when locked. Locking can be done on the touch sensors on every door handle and the lock button of the power closing trunk. The colors available for sedan are: Calcite White, Black, Cuprit Brown Metallic, Diamond White BRIGHT Metallic, Indium Grey Metallic, Iridium Silver Metallic, Obsidian Black, Palladium Silver Metallic, Pearl Beige Metallic, Tanzanite Blue Metallic and Tenorite Grey Metallic.

Mercedes-Benz traces its origins to Karl Benz's creation of the first petrol-powered car, the Benz Patent Motorwagen, patented in January 1886 and Gottlieb Daimler and engineer Wilhelm Maybach's conversion of a stagecoach by the addition of a petrol engine later that year.

The Mercedes automobile was first marketed in 1901 by Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft. The first Mercedes-Benz brand name vehicles were produced in 1926, following the merger of Karl Benz's and Gottlieb Daimler's companies into the Daimler-Benz company.

Mercedes-Benz has introduced many technological and safety innovations that later became common in other vehicles.
